It is my opinion that having a "big society" would doom humanity. At the end of his Journal Bill Moyers began discussion of the concept of oligarchy. Inevitably, because of the asymmetry of politico-economic power, a Realpolitik attitude arises within the empowered minority which redefines their former (legitimate or not?) leadership role as endgame manipulation.

Weak minds and hearts are in charge. They are deluded that money based economics is paramount and that the uninformed must be exploited to prolong survival of the elite. (A Dr. Strangelove mentality) The financial sector actually produces nothing good that might not otherwise be produced (or done). Short-circuiting the world economy with decentralized alternatives and disobedience is the only viable hope for avoiding mass terminal suffering. I would go so far as to say that even if we don't make it that I would prefer we surrender our collective life in a hospice and not in a torture chamber designed by the sadists running things today.

While Gandhi said something to the effect that it matters not to the dead which extremists killed them, I think he would prefer dying in a dignified fast over imposed starvation. That dignity requires forethought, planning and judgment. But let us plan to survive by refusing to use carbon fuels, eat wasteful crops, or travel by extravagant means. Let us do work not for wages but because humanity collectively needs our specific labor. Let us speak forcefully but nonviolently to destructive and hoarding power whenever the opportunity arises, without fear of retribution. Emulate the highest dignities of Haiti and demand assistance directed toward the greatest suffering and deprivation.

A person can only inhabit one room at a time, eat a certain caloric intake daily and be healthy, focus upon the self for a short time before diminishing his/her personhood. No person can become or long remain exceedingly wealthy, or extremely poor (adds Bill Moyers) in a fair and just society (community). Lester Brown has somehow learned to act out these principles. He also seeks and values truth.
